Old Baldy

I'd say the #1 attraction at Bald Head Island is the lighthouse affectionately called "Old Baldy". The Bald Head Island Lighthouse was the very first lighthouse (of the seven lighthouses) in North Carolina.

This old lighthouse sits at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Ironically, just across the river/Atlantic is the Oak Island Lighthouse. When we are sitting on the beach, we can see both lighthouses.

We decided that we would climb to the top of Old Baldy...

I thought I was going to hyperventilate as I have a MAJOR fear of heights.

Outside is the old brick oil house...the first oil used to burn the light was whale blubber:

Once I made it down (drenched in sweat), I was very very happy! :)

Beside the lighthouse is the famed chapel on Bald Head. Many many many people choose to get married in this quaint little chapel.

We had such a wonderful time at Bald Head. I hope that we can return someday. If you get the chance, this is a MUST destination.
